The Dangers of Sexual Immorality

Friday, July 9, 2010

In this post, I’m gonna talk about what most people try to avoid talking about: Sexual Immorality.

We live in a society that tends to belittle sexual promiscuity. It’s virtually everywhere. It’s in music lyrics, TV shows, movies, video games, books, commercials, billboards, and even cartoons. Did I miss anywhere? Probably. It’d be easier to list where it isn’t.

God never intended us to be so careless with the gift of sex. Yes! I said gift! It was meant for men and women after they get married. God ordained this for our own protection.

Read the scripture below, and I’ll write a little more after you’re done reading...

1 Corinthians 6:12-20

12”Everything is permissible for me"—but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is permissible for me"—but I will not be mastered by anything. 13"Food for the stomach and the stomach for food"—but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. 14By his power God raised the Lord from the dead, and he will raise us also. 15Do you not know that your bodies are members of Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute? Never! 16Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body? For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." 17But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit. 18Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who sins sexually sins against his own body. 19Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
In this passage, though Paul seems to be emphasizing sex with prostitutes, he is referring also to sexual immorality in general, which would include premarital sex and all the immoral sex that is rampant in our society.

Ok, back to my original point…this is for your own protection. If you have sex prior to marriage, it is more likely your marriage will end in divorce. Everybody knows divorce is painful and hurts people, especially when children are involved.

In general, our society can’t wait. Everything is instant. Including sex. People go on numerous dates with numerous partners, and the inclination to wait never crosses their mind. Next thing you know, they’re engaging in impersonal, empty, unloving, premarital sex. What kind of commitment does this show? People who live like this are only increasing their chances of having an unwanted pregnancy or getting a sexually transmitted disease.

Those who are steadfast, and remain pure, will be rewarded with heartfelt, meaningful, and most of all, loving sex. Also, if you’re willing to wait, it shows commitment, dedication, and that you truly love your future husband or wife.

Thankfully, Jesus forgives us when we mess up. Temptation is strong in our society, perhaps stronger than it’s ever been. And it’s easy to give in. But with Jesus, and the Holy Spirit, we can have the strength to overcome temptation and keep our temples pure.

I may not be a marriage expert, but here’s somebody who is. Jimmy Evans is a minister who teaches how to have a strong marriage and how to bring dying ones back to life. He and his wife were almost at the point of ending their marriage, but with God’s help, they were able to breathe new life into their relationship and now teach others how to do the same. They also share advice about Godly dating. For those interested, here's his website.

I hope this blog helps somebody and God bless…
